Terry Wehler family

Who are We

Plain Pastures is a family-owned farm established in 2017 by the Terry Wehler family. With their children Kelsey and Kolton’s assistance, they actively raise llamas, alpacas, and grass-finished beef on 92 acres of rotationally grazed pastures. Terry grew up farming on this very same land.

Rotational Grazing Beef

Plain Pastures engages in custom grazing of cattle during the growing season. Their rotational pastures were previously highly erodible cropland that has been converted. Additionally, they also manage 185 acres of pasture lands. They aim to promote sustainable farming practices.

By converting cropland to pastures, the farm conserves topsoil and promotes increased carbon sequestering practices. Studies have shown that rotational pasture practices lock down more carbon into the soil than any other grazing or farming practice. Additionally, this grazing better conserves moisture and increases pasture yields. Rotational grazing helps to produce a quality beef product while increasing habitat for wildlife and birds.

Llamas

The farm’s herd of llamas has grown to 15 and continues to expand yearly! Llamas are unique and gentle animals and are great protectors for smaller ruminants as they constantly watch for predators. Moreover, their fiber is highly valued as it is used for crafting and making garments. Each llama has a distinct personality, making them incredibly inquisitive and entertaining to watch. The Plain Pastures team has been running the ‘Share a Llama’ program for the past two years, which offers local youth from FFA and 4H groups the opportunity to experience the joy of raising and showing llamas.

Back 40 Boutique

Kelsey is a multi-talented individual who contributes to the farm and has recently embarked on an exciting new venture. In 2022, she launched ‘Back 40 Boutique’, an online clothing store that offers a unique blend of small-town, country, and boho-style clothing at an affordable price point. Driven by her passion for fashion and entrepreneurship, Kelsey has created a platform that caters to women of all ages, shapes, and sizes, ensuring they can find something that resonates with their style and makes them feel fabulous.

Come on Over

The Plain Pastures team is thrilled to welcome all of you to join them on the Hill and Valley Tour this year! They will be offering guided tours of their pastures and llama hikes. You can also purchase beef and llama products, as well as check out the ‘Back 40 Boutique’ booth.

Please follow us at PLAIN PASTURES  on Facebook for additional fun on the farm and upcoming agritourism events.
