The Ridge Barn (aka the Kinsman Farm Wedding Barn), La Valle, WI
Bill and Debbie Kinsman
In 2009, Bill and Debbie Kinsman sold their dairy cows, and started on a new farming adventure of crop farming — raising corn and soybeans. As they no longer needed alfalfa hay bales or straw stored in the massive haymow, Bill cleaned out the haymow and installed a new floor. At that time, the plan was to use it for storage. But on New Year’s Eve 2013, Bill and Deb’s daughter, Ashley, got engaged!
Ashley dreamed of using the barn for her wedding reception and dance scheduled for September 2014. A lot of cleaning, refurbishing, and decorating later, the barn haymow turned into a wonderful wedding venue. Ashley’s wedding was truly lovely with an easy, down‐home charm.
After the wedding, friends and neighbors began asking the Kinsmans if they could rent the barn. And, so began the process of getting a use permit and zoning change, from Exclusive Ag to Recreation Commercial, to create the Ridge Barn venue. The Ridge Barn has now been rented for several wedding receptions and dances, as well as an outdoor wedding for a family member. The Ridge Barn has also hosted an 80th birthday party, a 40th wedding anniversary party and dance, and a family reunion. The Kinsmans like to keep everything local, and do not advertise on a wide scale, but the Ridge Barn venue is available for the right event. It has been a great opportunity to make use of the huge barn in a new way.
